Cockroach
Cockroaches, referring generally to insects of the order Blattodea, are typical indoor pests that thrive in warm, humid environments with access to food and secluded crevices. They are commonly found in kitchens, bathrooms, electrical/data closets, warehouses, and commercial back-of-house areas. Primarily nocturnal, they spend daylight hours hiding in cabinet gaps, wall voids, around drainage pipes, and behind or beneath appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers, and ovens.
The most prevalent species in residential and commercial settings is the German Cockroach (Blattella germanica), characterized by its small size, rapid reproduction, and heavy reliance on indoor habitats. Other common species include the American Cockroach and Australian Cockroach, which are larger and typically associated with sewers, utility shafts, and underground spaces.
Roaches undergo incomplete metamorphosis, with a life cycle consisting of three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. There are approximately 6,000 species (some sources cite 2,250+) distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical regions, living either in the wild or indoors. Notably, a decapitated cockroach can survive for up to nine days, eventually dying only from starvation.

The hazard of roaches
Cockroaches can carry a wide variety of pathogenic microorganisms on their bodies and within their digestive tracts, including Shigella (dysentery), Salmonella, Staphylococcus, E. coli, hepatitis viruses, and parasite eggs. When these contaminated roaches crawl over food or tableware, they can transmit these pathogens to humans. Furthermore, their secretions, excrement, and vomitus can trigger severe allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
Due to their extensive range of activity and omnivorous diet, cockroaches frequently move between unsanitary areas—such as trash bins, toilets, and restrooms—and food preparation surfaces. This behavior makes them highly effective vectors for enteric (intestinal) diseases and parasite eggs.
Beyond health risks, cockroaches cause significant economic losses by gnawing on and fouling factory products, retail merchandise, and household food supplies. Occasionally, infestations can lead to malfunctions in communication equipment and computers, leading to operational accidents. In some regions, cockroaches are even aptly dubbed "Computer Pests."
